The interview has been going on for about 20 minutes and everything seems to be going well. Then, suddenly, the interviewer asks an unexpected question, “Which is more important, law or love?”

Job applicants increasingly find themselves asked strange questions like this. And the signs are that this is beginning to happen in China.

Employers want people who are skilled, enthusiastic and devoted. So these are the

qualities that any reasonable intelligent job applicant will try to show no matter what his or her actual feelings are.

In response, employers are increasingly using questions that can try and show the applicant’s true personality.

The question in the first paragraph comes from a test called the Kiersey Personality Sorter. It is an attempt to discover how people solve problems, . This is often called aptitude (智能) testing.

According to Mark Baldwin of Alliance many job applicants in China are finding this type of questions difficult. When a Chinese person fills out an aptitude test he or she will think there is a right answer and they may well fail because they try to guess what the examiner wants to see. This is sometimes called the prisoner’s dilemma(窘境). Applicants are trying to act cleverly in their own interest. But they fail because they don’t understand what the interviewer is looking for. Remember that in an aptitude test, the correct answer is always the honest answer.

1. What does the writer mainly want to tell us in the passage?(within 10 words)

2. Which sentence in the passage can be replaced by the following one?

More and more people are realizing that they will have to face some unexpected questions when being interviewed.

4. What question would you ask the applicant if you were the employer in order to figure out his personality?(within 10 words)

5. Translate the underlined sentence into Chinese.

come about发生;speak up大声说出;regard as 把„„当作。

3. 解析:选A。 be to blame没有被动形式。 4. 解析:选A。

7. 解析:选A。

D。devote oneself to(=be devoted to)献身于;stick to坚持;refer to提及;参考,均不符合句意。

make sense讲得通。

2. 解析:选A。从下文的“You can pick grapes in France”可知答案。 3.

4. 解析:选A。

6. 解析:选B。因为Anthea Ellis 在讨论学生假期在国外找工作的问题,因此说她是一个adviser on vacation work for students。

10. 解析:选A。

从后文“The kids never slept!”

14. 解析:选D。此空与第一段“The pay is usually poor”相对应。空后的“and it really was a 24-hour-a-day job”也有提示。 15. B。have an easy time意思是“过得轻松、愉快”。从后文“they see it as a holiday”可知,这些孩子想过得愉快些。

16. 解析:选A。

18. B。“you’ll work if it’s convenient for the company that employs you ”是对上句的解释,而不是总结,因此A项不合文意。

19. 解析:选A。从下句“As soon as the holiday season 20(finishes) , they’ll get rid of you”来看,“你”没有多少受雇佣的权力。

20. 解析:选D。从前文“all vacation work is casual work”可知,假期一结束,他们就会解雇“你”。 Ⅵ.

1. Why Chinese applicants fail in the job interviews./Aptitude test in job interviews. 2. Job applicants increasingly find themselves asked strange questions like this.

3. rather than what they know /instead of what they know /instead of what knowledge they have

4.What would you do if you fail this interview?
